iPhone

The iPhone went on sale in the United States on 29 June 2007 and hundreds of customers lined up outside the stores nationwide.  The original iPhone was made available in the UK, France and Germany in November 2007.  Ireland and Austria followed in the spring of 2008.

The iPhone was an instant success and was followed in July 2008 by the release of the iPhone 3G in a total of twenty two countries.

The iPhone 3GS was announced in June 2009 and released throughout June, July and August.  As of January 2010 there are thought to be more than 42 million iPhones around the world.

A big attraction of iPhone is the ability to run third-party applications on the device.  Initially these apps could only be delivered as web applications through the Safari browser.  However, in October 2007, Steve Jobs announced that a Software Developer Kit (SDK) would be made available to third-party developers.  The availability of the SDK and a firmware update for the iPhone in July 2008 allowed applications delivered through the iTunes App Store to be installed and launched on the iPhone.
iTunes App Store

The Apple iTunes App Store provides distribution facilities for third-party application developers allowing small companies and individuals to reach customers at an international level.

Users of the App Store can browse and download applications that have been developed with the iPhone SDK and published through Apple.  Apps can be free or paid-for and can either be downloaded direct to the device or downloaded to your PC or Mac via iTunes and synchronised to the device at a later time.

An update to iTunes in July 2008 launched the App Store and the number of apps and downloads has grown at an exponential rate.  At the time of the iPad launch by Apple on 27 January 2010 reports indicated that the number of apps available was 140,000 and that there had been over 3 billion downloads.
